Healthy Community Day was all about exploring health challenges within our community.

Leadership Kitsap’s Healthy Community Day was held at Harrison Medical Center, Silverdale, on January 8, 2016. Kody Russell, Kitsap Strong Project Director kicked off the day by sharing Kitsap Strong’s collaborative impact initiative to improve the overall health and well-being of Kitsap and its residents through the prevention of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and building of resilience, a theme woven throughout the day. Kitsap County Health Director, Dr. Susan Turner, gave a straightforward report of the current, critical health issues in Kitsap County.

Class members participated in round table discussions of challenges in our community hosted by several local agencies: Coffee Oasis, teen homelessness; Continuum of Care/Homeless Coalition, Kitsap’s homelessness; Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas, teen suicide; Holly Ridge Center, children birth to five; Kitsap County Division of Aging & Long Term Care, senior information and assistance; Kitsap Mental Health, mental health services; Peninsula Community Health Services, healthcare for the underserved; and United Way of Kitsap County Volunteer Center, volunteer opportunities. David Schultz, CHI Franciscan Health Market President, Peninsula Region welcomed the class and gave an update on Harrison Medical Center’s future plans. The class was then treated to a gourmet lunch prepared by the chefs of Silverdale Harrison Medical Center. After lunch, Nick Wyatt (LK13) lead a group reflection on the Positive Leadership capacity of Resilience.

The afternoon revolved around an activity that ultimately broadened the class members’ knowledge of the various key health care and social service agencies available in Kitsap County. Class members were given case studies reflecting possible scenarios in Kitsap County and had to visit the various agency representatives to find possible solutions. The participating agencies were: Crisis Clinic of the Peninsulas, Holly Ridge Center, Hospice of Kitsap County, Housing Solutions of Kitsap County, Kitsap Community Resources, Kitsap Public Health District, Meals on Wheels Kitsap, Peninsula Community Health Services, and the Suquamish Tribe. The activity was debriefed by Marie Singleton (LK09).
